March 2008 SCUTTLEBUTTNewsletter of the Chesapeake Sailing ClubCommodore's Columm Our northern contingent has had several wonderful events this winter, attracting several potential new members. We've invited these couples to join us for a summer rendezvous so they can have a full-fledged CSC experience. Last year our vice-commodore Liz Cingel committed to rebuilding the number of people participating in our winter parties, and she's done a great job. In addition, Liz has volunteered to head up the nominating committee this spring as we look for people to assume the positions of vice-commodore and fleet captain. If you're interested in taking the lead for planning either our land parties or our on-the-water cruises, please contact her. We're only a couple of months away from being back on our boats and into our summer schedule. Check out Fleet Captain Jim Luciano's summer cruising schedule and start getting psyched for the 2008 sailing season. Social Report The CSC February party was held at the Cingels' house recently. Nineteen people attended. That's a record for a CSC North party. We asked for volunteers to tell us their interesting sailing experiences. Tom Muha told us about their experience landing a 14 foot dinghy on Sandy Cay in the Bahamas with their two children on board. A rogue wave knocked their boat over, trapped their daughter under the boat, and Gina's ankle was broken. Their son sustained a bad head injury and Tom had a shoulder injury. They were rescued by VISAR (Virgin Island Search and Rescue) thanks to a passing yacht and taken to a local hospital for treatment. Gina wrote the television network that sponsored "Rescue 911" and their story was featured on that show. They were the actors. No one could top that story. Those attending were the Beckers, Joe Hutchins, Debbi Knott, Eve-Marie Lacroix, Lymans, Millers, Weinfelds, Muhas, Paynes, friends of the Cingels Dona and Jim Force, and Cingels. The next party will be held on March 1 at 5 PM at Janet Kumer's condo at Severn House. Dave Ewing will co-host. RSVP to Janet at jkumer1@hotmail.com. Please plan to bring a heavy hors d'oeuvre. Dave and Janet will supply shrimp, sodas, wine, and Dave's special pies. Mark your calendar - the annual picnic will be held on August 16 at Belvedere Yacht Club. Bring the books you have read for a book exchange. ______________________Joe (no longer hungry) Shreiber reports from CSC South: It was a typical blustery winter day in Florida as the temperature would struggle to get above eighty, but that didn't stop Mel Knott, the Smith's, the Luciano's, the Shreiber's, the MacDonald's, and the O'Neal's trek to the Buckley's to conduct some very important business. In addition to the usual obscene quantities of salads, casseroles and desserts which adorn these events, Sue Buckley had prepared a honey-baked ham. The main business of the day was to plan for the next parties, which will be at the Knott's on March 9th and at the beach on April 14th. Whew, glad that's over. Let's eat again. Thanks Sue and Jack for being such wonderful hosts. News from our Members
From the Editor After reading Jim Luciano's job description for Newsletter editor in the last issue of SCUTTLEBUT, it wasn't a hard sell when the Commodore asked me if I'd accept the job. Who wouldn't?! "It pays big bucks and takes no more than a couple of minutes to write. Others do all the work and all you do is give orders then sit back, relax and watch the articles come rolling in. The Commodore will even submit something that you can edit the hell out and change the meaning entirely."
This first issue was indeed easy, thanks to quick response from several of you to my email just a few days ago. S/v Flash is ready to launch next week, and I'm sure many of you are getting ready for the sailing season as well. I will send out the newsletter the last week of every month, so would like to receive your articles no later than the 25th of every month. Don't forget to send photos as well. Email: evemarie@comcast.net.
